shocking manga found at library

Over at Mangablog, a pointer to a story out of Canada about a parent who was shocked that her son checked out Happy Mania from the library. It is a little hard to tell from the story where the manga was shelved. I’d hope that for titles like Happy Mania, there would be an adult or mature readers comics section in the library.

I was curious, so I checked that title in our public library system. The Cleveland Public Library has it cataloged in their fiction department, with ADULT in all-caps. (*whew!*) Interestingly enough, it’s not cataloged with other graphic novels (from what I can tell, anyway.)

I’m wondering if some unknowing library aide saw the book and reshelved it in the juvinelle section. It’s amazing that some people don’t realize that not all graphic novels are intended for young audiences.

The Toronto Public Library doesn’t have Happy Mania. Or Tramps Like Us or GTO. I kind of blanked on some other “adult” titles to try (not that GTO is really an adult book). They *have* decided that Gravitation is a teen title though, and I’m not sure how I feel about that. It’s rated 16+ and to me a teen section is 12 and up. I can’t see a parent being pleased about their 13 year old bringing home the volume where Shuichi is gang raped by three guys… Maybe that’s just me though. I have no idea how carefully any of these books are gone through before cataloguing. I guess it’s unreasonable to expect everything to be checked, but if a book is rated for older teens it’s probably worth taking a look to see why.

It looks like in the suburban system where I check out books, Happy Mania is classified mostly as YA. Tramps Like Us and Erica Sakurazawa books are mostly classified as adult.

Just going from the library collections via the online catalogs, it is a little hard to tell, because you can’t go into the library to look at the way they’ve actually set up the shelves.

I may only be 16 but I’ve been around the block on mangas like these. I am pleased to say that my public library does not release these types of manga.

In the bookstore in my town these types of manga are in the Romance section far away from the other manga. All though shounen-ai is in the other manga because it’s not as graphic such as the manga “Loveless”

A note to all concerned parents or whoever!! If a manga says “June” (pronounce joo-nay) on the spine or on it at all and your child is underaged and is asking for you to buy it for them. Don’t! It is severely graphic!! I am a fan of it myself but it is not for the average teens. It is more suited for mature audiences.

Just thought I’d give my two-bits on this subject. Hope I could’ve been of some help.
