Manga Stuff

Many good manga & anime links from earlier this week:
New issue of animefringe is up, I enjoyed the reviews of Samurai Seven (mixes The Seven Samurai with cyborgs) and Trinity Blood (a show about a vampire vampire hunter who happens to be a priest). I love shows with samurai and vampire vampire hunters, those are two of my favorite things! Now if only someone would make a show about a samurai vampire vampire hunter with a cyborg sidekick, I don’t think I could ask for anything more.
New issue of Sequential Tart is up, check out the reviews of Gatchaman (aka Battle of the Planets), interview with the fab Bryan Lee O’Malley, and an article by Pam Bliss about western and Japanese comic art conventions.
Another Fruits Basket translation post at Completely Futile
When is a long-running manga series too much? Manga blog comments on some posts from people giving up on long series, while Love Manga points out the longest running series. I might pick up the first volume of Golgo 13, but there’s no way I’d buy 138 volumes! I tend to balance out some series by watching the anime instead. I know that often the anime versions will change the storyline, but I’ve seen all of the Rurouni Kenshin and Fushigi Yugi anime so I don’t feel the need to pick up every single volume of the manga.

I am looking forward to watching Samurai Seven. I have seen the first episode of this show and it looks great.
It is very hard to hang in there with long manga series. I often look to see how long a series it is before I buy it. I don’t think I would have the patience to hang in there for 139 volumes.

I’m glad to know that the first episode looked good – I have the dvds in my Netflix queue, but it might take a bit of time before I watch them.
You’d have to be a really, really, really big Golgo 13 fan to buy 139 volumes.
