comics and libraries

Comics blog The Low Road has a guest post on comics and libraries from a comic fan/library patron perspective. It does spend a bit of time examining the perspective that by lending copies of a graphic novel out at a library, it takes away sweet cold cash from the publishing industry.

And here’s an article about comics workshops in an Arizona library {via}

    Odd perspective, to be concerned about the GN publishing industry specifically when the entire library is full of books and DVDs and CDs and goodness knows what else — the public library where my mother worked lent out art reproductions — being lent to the public without charge …

    It isn’t an uncommon attitude among comic fans - the comic industry isn’t doing so well (all the real money is made in toys or movies) and people want to support the publishers to make sure that the comics are being produced.

    It is a perspective that I think you’re only likely to find among people who have a certain income. If you’re too poor to have much disposable income to spend on entertainment, I’d guess that “supporting the publisher” would be the last thing on your mind.
