Amethyst Princess of Gemworld #3

May 26th, 2008 at 7:09 am » Comments (3)

The cover of the third issue of Amethyst Princess of Gemworld features plenty of fashion and fighting. Granch is fighting a horrible lizard dude who is wearing some disturbing orange pants. Amy is wearing a fetching Pac-Man t-shirt while being menaced by a serpent. None of these events actually take place in this comic, but [...]

Amethyst Princess of Gemworld #2

May 19th, 2008 at 7:30 am » Comments (0)

In the second issue of Amethyst Princess of Gemworld, Amy is kidnapped by Prince Carnelian. He’s Dark Opal’s adopted son. As you would expect from anyone related to Dark Opal, he is sneaky and conniving. He’s also one of the funniest examples of Gemworld royalty due to his total lack of self-awareness. Prince Carnelian is [...]

Amethyst Princess of Gemworld!

May 12th, 2008 at 11:36 am » Comments (11)

New blog feature! Every week I will attempt to post a few scans from Amethyst Princess of Gemworld and an issue summary. Amethyst had a couple of short-lived mini-series in the 80s which detailed the adventures of an ordinary girl named Amy Winston who finds out that she’s actually a princess from a magical world. [...]

New Kids’ Comics Blog

Check out Word Balloons, a new blog devoted to comic books for kids. It should be excellent, Mangablog’s Brigid Alverson has put together a great group of contributors. I think this blog will really come in handy for librarians who work with children.

Life Sucks

Life Sucks by Jessica Abel, Gabriel Soria, and Warren Pleece (amazon)
Vampire Clerks. I figure most reviews of this graphic novel are going to use this phrase, so I thought I’d get it out of the way as soon as possible. Dave Miller works the night shift at the Last Stop convenience store. He wakes [...]

Fun Home Protest in Utah

March 27th, 2008 at 10:39 pm » Comments (7)

Some students at the University of Utah are frightened by autobiographical graphic novels, as shown in this story where they compare Fun Home to pornography. There’s even a protest group with an online petition, I find horrible mid-90s web page design much more frightening than porn. If students are horribly traumatized by reading graphic novels [...]

Kaput and Zosky

Kaput and Zosky by Lewis Trondheim (amazon)
Kaput and Zosky is a thoroughly delightful comic book for young people about inept space invaders. Kaput and Zosky travel from planet to planet looking for a world to rule but they never seem to manage to pull it off. They land on a planet where the [...]

Laika and Robot Dreams

A couple of the books that I most enjoyed reading because of the Cybils were Laika and Robot Dreams.
Laika by Nick Abadzis (amazon)
Laika combines fact and fiction in a retelling of the story of the first dog in space. I didn’t really know a whole lot about the historical background of Laika’s flight, [...]
