Books
Last Life by Claire Messud - For some reason this book about a French family and Algeria took me months to read. I’d read a chapter or two, and put it aside for several weeks. It was well written, but I didn’t find any of the characters very sympathetic.
Bone in the Throat by Anthony Bourdain - Much better than Bourdain’s second novel, this book had cooking and restaurant references that were missing from Gone Bamboo.
Wildwood Dancing by Juliet Marillier - My YA book club selection of the month, this was an ok, but fairly predictable reworking of the 12 dancing princesses and the frog prince. I liked the Transylvanian setting.
The Dark Mirror, Blade of Fortriu, The Well of Shades by Juliet Marillier
The Pinhoe Egg by Diana W Jones - I’m always happy to read a Chrestomanci book.

Noticed the reference to a re-working of the Frog Prince. Have you ever encountered Donna Jo Napoli’s rendition, The prince of the pond, otherwise known as De Fawg Pin, and its sequel Jimmy: the pickpocket of the palace? Utterly and completely delightful, I thought them, a good balance between reality and fantasy, humour and poignancy.

No, but those books sound great. I’ll have to check them out!
