Bye Bye for now ALA

in: Library

I just got my ALA renewal notice, but I can’t afford to keep my membership this year. It looks like I’ll be picking up a little intermittent part-time work, but it really isn’t enough to justify spending $110 on a membership to a professsional orgainization. Maybe I’ll join some local library organizations instead.

I know the feeling - I hated to let my AIGA membership expire, but it was just a bit too expensive and not enough return for me as a non-full-time designer whose workplace would not pick up the tab. Maybe again someday, but right now I’m not in the best space to take full advantage of it as an organization for professionals and networking.

That’s the way it goes, I guess. If I was working full time or had more regular part-time work, I’d consider keeping the membership. But now, I’d rather spend any money I have on fixing up my condo.

Keep in mind that you can also renew at the lower “retired” rate or whatever the low income level is. I can see all sorts of reasons not to renew, so this isn’t a hard sell, but if it’s really just the money, you have options.

Well, it is partially the money and partially because I have no idea what I’m going to be doing for a regular job. I’d join different divisions of ALA depending on what type of job I had. And I’m also not planning on going to any of the conferences anytime soon, so that’s another reason not to renew right now.
