Dragon Head by Minetaro Mochizuki
(amazon)
Reading Dragon Head gave me the feeling that I was watching a great Twilight Zone episode. Fans of horror and suspense will like this series. Teru Aoki wakes up in the chaos of a crashed train. He was returning from a school trip with his classmates, but as he surveys his surroundings it is clear that everyone is dead. The train crashed after going into a tunnel, so everything is dark. Teru finds a lighter and tries to explore the tunnel to find a way to escape but he finds rockfalls at both ends of the tunnel. He discoveres two other survivors, an unconsious girl and an unhinged boy named Nobuo. As they try to survive and take stock of their situation, flashbacks from the train ride before the accident raise questions about the cause of the accident. It seems like more than a simple earthquake. The art in Dragon Head matches the story - the dark tones add to the claustrophobic atmosphere of the tunnel.
I read this and quite liked it, but was disappointed by Tokyopop not translating any of the sound effects. It seemed like they’d be an important part of the story, especially to help create the proper mood. Instead I found myself wondering what sort of noises the characters were reacting to, which was pretty distracting.
The movie they made from this was pretty good. It got terrible reviews on Netflix/Amazon, i.e. “Quite possibly the worst film known to man, woman or child”, but I quite enjoyed it. I did not know it came from manga until later, so I may go back and read it and see how faithful it is.
I had no idea there was a movie version!
I have to say, I don’t mind it when they don’t redo the sound effects, but I can read katakana so I can usually figure out what is going on.
Ooooh, another interesting sounding title…another to put on my reading list.
I found it to be a luring tale of parnoia claustraphobia
and a sense of armageddon.
havent read the last book but i’m looking forward to it,
