Reading List, June 2006

Not being employed has let me read more books! And for some reason I felt more free to reread some old books.

Books
The Secret History of the Pink Carnation and The Masque of the Black Tulip by Lauren Willig – I thoroughly enjoyed these books – they were a pastiche of spy drama, romance novel, and historical fiction with plenty of swashbuckling. British spies go undercover to fight Napolean! Sometimes I would have preferred more swashbuckling and less bodice ripping, but these were great summer reads.

His Majesty’s Dragon, Throne of Jade, and Black Powder War by Naomi Novik – I was on a bit of a Napoleonic fiction kick at the beginning of the month, as I also read this fantasy series about England fighting Napolean with a ariel corps of dragons and dragon riders.

The Franchise Affair, Miss Pym Disposes, A Shilling for Candles, and To Love and Be Wise by Josephine Tey (rereads)
Don’t Look Down by Jennifer Crusie
Day of Atonement and Grievious Sin by Faye Kellerman
Death in Zanzibar by M.M. Kaye
The 92nd Tiger by Michael Gilbert – This was a fun book about a almost washed-up British actor who suddenly finds himself being appointed military advisor to a tiny country in the Middle East.
Kushiel’s Scion by Jacqueline Carey – I was a little nervous about picking this up, because I tried to read the first book of Carey’s more recent series and put it aside after finding it absolutely unreadable. But this was pretty good, a book featuring an almost grown-up Imriel trying to deal with the legacy of his mother.
Kushiel’s Dart and Kushiel’s Chosen (rereads)
