It seems weirdly appropriate that my last day of work is winding down with a final evening shift on the reference desk. Now I bring to you the Last Refgrunt:
Yes, you can borrow a pen.
Wow, that man is sneezing a lot. Oversize books are over there.
I give students the call number for the old issues of Sports Illustrated and show them how to find articles from the 1980s from The Boston Globe and The New York Times.
All our Proquest databases refuse to let me login so I make a note about it in our staff blog.
Sneezing man leaves his books on front of me at the desk because he doesn’t want to carry them with him as he seeks out other books, as they “seem fragile”. I don’t think any of our circulating books are so fragile that they would be damaged by someone carrying them around the library. I don’t really want to pick them up and shift them to the other side of the desk because of all the sneezing, so I leave them there.
Someone is stapling a lot.
Yes, you can have some headphones.
Staple. Staple. Staple. Staple.
I wonder if the germs can waft over from that pile of books and infect me. I have to pack up my apartment and move across the country in the next couple weeks, it would be bad if I got sick.
Sneezing person comes back with a very emphatic suggestion to improve our library map. I made the library map, but since I won’t be around to revise it, I tell him I will pass on the suggestion to the “map people”. I wish he had given me any indication earlier that he was confused about where he was going.
I e-mail the people who might be the new “map people”.
Thanks for bringing back the pen.
Thanks for bringing back the headphones. Yes the sound on the computers isn’t that great. I think people are looking into fixing that soon.
Ohmigod, that student over there is knitting what looks like a hat on circular knitting needles. I’m so tempted to go over there and ask what kind of yarn he’s using.
A graduate student doesn’t seem to be able to login to our electronic resources. I tell her a few things she can to do check into the problem, and tell her to come back if she needs me to log her in to any of the online resources from the library tonight.
You might want to check the the circulation desk for your lost umbrella, they keep the lost and found for the library.
Hmm, that book doesn’t have a call number? We might not have it anymore. I look up the call number it would have had in the MARC record. I tell her to check the shelves just in case, but she might have to request that book through interlibrary loan. The student comes back after checking the shelves to say that she found 3 other books that look just as good as the book she was originally looking for. Yay for browsing!
You can add money to your copy card over there.
Sorry, I don’t give out change.
Someone is rearranging all the chairs by the computer stations. It seems he has tested all the chairs like Goldilocks, and has now found the chair that is “just right”.
You can print things out over there.
Here’s a pen for you.
I discuss the time-out behavior of various databases with a guy who is writing a paper on his laptop with 3 library databases open at the same time in various browser windows.
Someone wants to know if they can renew books over the phone, I transfer the call to the circulation desk.
Yes, you can have a pen.
That’s it! It feels very odd that today was my last day of work. I’m surprised at how few files and papers I’m bringing back home with me. I think because I don’t have a new job lined up, I have no idea what I’d need and I’m leaning towards decluttering whenever I can. Also, I doubt I’ll have a similar position in the future where I’m doing a bunch of library instruction, so it didn’t make much sense to save a whole lot of work-related stuff.

TangognaT, there you go! Your last day at work. Wow. Surreal, I’m sure. Will you be at a library when you move?
All best wishes with the upcoming nuptials!

I don’t have a job yet - I’ve been looking a little but but there isn’t really anything open that I’m qualified for. I’m going to wait until after the wedding to really start to worry about getting a job.
