Eden: It’s An Endless World by Hiroki Endo
(amazon)
Eden tells the story of the last few survivors of the human race after almost everyone was killed by a deadly virus. The first volume of this manga starts with the story of a teenage boy (Enoah) and a girl (Hannah) who are living in the shell of an abandoned research facility. The only other human who survived the virus with them is Layne, an older scientist whose health is failing. Endo describes the post-apocalyptic world and the history of Layne and Enoah’s father. The second half of the volume focuses on a boy named Elijah who is traveling through a deserted city with a robot companion. As you would expect from the title, Eden is a philosophical story exploring humanity’s role on the earth, evolution, and the nature of identity. Dark Horse rates this manga for mature readers, although I’m not totally sure why. Even though it is very violent at times it is more of a philosophical story as opposed to an all-out gore fest.
The art is very realistic and detailed. My only criticism of the book is that a few times it seemed a little bit too much like a thought piece, and while I was reading it I kept thinking, “Oh, here’s another biblical reference. And here is where the author questions the nature of humanity…”
This would be a good title to read for people who enjoyed Planetes, or if you enjoy thoughtful science fiction stories in general.
