I’ve managed to steer clear of J. Michael Straczynski. I think I only saw a couple random episodes of Babylon 5, and wasn’t really inspired to keep watching the TV series. I bought the first issue of Supreme Power, but I didn’t really like it enough to buy any more comic books. I was very glad that there was a preview issue online of Straczynski’s recent Dr. Strange mini-series, because I was able to read it and decide that it was icky before spending any money on it. I even wanted to like the Dr. Strange mini, because I’ve always enjoyed stories featuring the Master of the Mythic Arts.
However, I will happily buy The Book of Lost Souls because the artist on the project is Colleen Doran. If someone were to write a comic book illustrated by her where the only dialog for 32 pages was people saying “Poo!” to each other, I’d still be tempted to buy the comic only for the art.
Jonathan is attempting to kill himself, when a man hands him a book with blank pages. Instead of dying Jonathan is brought to the future and it seems like he’s going to be caught up in a titanic struggle between good and evil. The first issue sets up the story, and I’m curious to see what happens as Jonathan adjusts to his new role and the modern world. More importantly, this comic features Colleen Doran drawing a lovely looking haunted man with a billowing scarf. I’m not sure what else you really need in a comic book. The first issue of this series is out now.
