Anansi Boys

in: books

Anansi Boys (amazon) 4/5 stars

This isn’t really a sequel to American Gods, but it is about a god who lives in America, and a son of a god living in England. Fat Charlie has been continually embarrassed by his father for as long as he remembers. In addition to being a quirky father with a unique sense of style (you have to like a man who wears a green fedora), Mr. Nancy was the Spider God. His death causes Fat Charlie’s life to spiral out of control. Charlie has to deal with a quartet of quirky old ladies, his fiance Rosie, his long-lost brother, and an odious boss.

The narrative switches back and forth between Charlie’s story and stories of the Trickster God. Anansi Boys is less sweeping in scope and ambition than American Gods - it feels like much cozier. It is filled with good humor and lovely writing. This is going to be one of those comfort reading books I turn to when I’m feeling blah.

Saw Neil down at the Library of Congress National Book Festival down in DC and he says he wrote it so people wouldn’t think Terry Prachet was the only reason Good Omens was funny.

I can see that - the book did seem very funny in a Neil sort of way.
