what is this thing called manga?

Here’s an article about manga from the Sentinel & Enterprise. It’s pretty typical of the newspaper introduction to manga genre, but one thing I liked about the article was the way it quoted a variety of people, an anthropology professor, teenagers, and the young adult librarian at a local library. In light of the discussions that result from interviews like this about what U.S. comic book companies are doing or not doing to reach out to young teens, I thought some of the quotes in the article were interesting:

To an extent I like American comics, but not as much.. I’m not quite sure why. Just because hearing about the same superheros over and over gets kind of boring. With manga, there are ends to stories, rather than the same plot going on for decades.

The stories have different people, different types of characters. I like it when the girl in manga saves the guy.
