The advance copy that I was most excited to nab at ALA was Cornelia Funke’s Inkspell (amazon). In Inkheart Funke introduced the father and daughter team of Mo and Meggie, and the strange characters that come to life when Mo reads aloud from a book called Inkheart. In Inkspell, the characters that remain in Meggie’s world, Dustfinger and Farid, want to return to Inkheart. Mo is concerned about the time that Meggie spends thinking about the other world. Dustfinger decides to return, and Meggie and Farid attempt to follow him. Once they get to Inkworld they discover that the story has changed and become darker.
One thing that I enjoy about the Inkworld novels is the evil characters are pure EVIL! Even the “good” characters have serious flaws. Meggie makes some questionable decisions that made me wonder if she would be so quick to act if she didn’t have the comfort of knowing that the people she’s affecting were part of a book. Inkspell’s ending is more of a stopping point than a conclusion, so now I have to wait for the third book in the trilogy to come out to find out what happens to everybody.

I read Inkheart, and I’m debating on Inkspell. I mainly want to find out about what happened to Basta and the Magpie. Does Inkspell answer these questions, or am I just grasping at straws here?
12:09 pm on November 29th, 2005 2
The story is more about Meggie, but it is good.

I LOVED Inkheart–it’s one of my favorite books. I just finished Inkspell yesterday night (i stayed up until 2 AM) and I cried my eyes out!!! I’ve been searching for a place to just shout how i fee (thank god for the internet lol)l. I was so disappointed, though. I don’t wanna ruin it for anyone but, I can’t believe *** dies. I hope the 3rd book comes out before I rip my hair out. I was sad to find out that Meggie changed–in a way I sort of liked her in the last book. Meggie and Farid are meant to be!!! **sigh**lol. For a big that thick, you’d think a good ending would come out of it……..
1:29 pm on January 3rd, 2006 11
Does anyone know when the 3rd book comes out??
5:09 pm on January 3rd, 2006 12
No, I think the 3rd book is still being written and doesn’t have a release date yet, as far as I know.
10:49 pm on January 5th, 2006 13
I loved this book so much! I just finished reading it yesterday and still can’t put it down. The end was really unexpected and I can’t wait for the third book! Whenever it comes out…

man i hate dustfinger but i love him at the same time farid was a good character but that stupid idiot sootbird should have taken dustfingers place (like that would have ever happen, psh not in million years, but a girl can still hope cant she)and then they had to go make ***** immortal what idiots
12:12 pm on January 21st, 2006 15
THIS ISNT FAIR!!! NO BODY SHOULD DIE I FEEL SOOO BAD FOR DUSFINGER HE WAS ALWAYS THERE FOR MEGGIE AND MO (EVEN THUGH HE BETRAYED THEM….BUT HE WAS DESPRATE!!!) i threw the book on the wall when I was done cause of Dustfinger -_-
3:18 pm on January 22nd, 2006 16
I love both books. I can’t believe what happens to dustfinger. He was a great character. I wonder if meggie will bring him back somehow.
6:36 pm on January 25th, 2006 17
I have a feeling that Funke is going to write another book in that series. I think so because Mo said that it was only a matter of weeks before the Adderhead met his fate, and that Farid said “I’ll bring Dustfinger back. This story will have a happy ending. I swear.”
7:03 pm on January 28th, 2006 18
*gasp!* I loved Inkspell! I cannot wait for the next book to come out and the film! It’s my fave book at the mo, but I really didn’t like the ending. I mean, I liked it, but I didn’t like what happened. Poor **********!!!!!! And making the ********* immortal! Just soooooo not fair! I hope thingy comes back in the third one, cos if he didn’t that would just be bang out of order! The end was soooo unexpected, I so thought it was gonna be happy and cheerful! And then it was sad!!! I think that in the third one Meggie and Mo and Farid and Resa will bring back thingy (Let’s just call him Fred), and that Fred will teach Farid more stuff, and I hope evil Fenoglio dies. Well, actually I don’t cause that would get rid of the story (Bad idea Josie, bad idea). And I liked the idea of all the confused romance in the story. Dustfinger was all confused bout Resa and Roxane and like “Which one is my wife?” and Fenoglio wished Roxane wasn’t Dustfinger’s wife and he gets confused with it too. Then you have Mo and Resa, who have only just seen each other after about nine years, and Meggie doesn’t know what’s happened to her life either because of Farid. Confused? Yeah, me too. Oh, I cannot get over the ending. I thought (hoped) they was going to live happily ever after in the Inkworld, but ’cause I knew there was going to be a third one, I knew it wouldn’t turn out like that, but theres always a bit of hope isn’t there? Since reading the book I’ve become more like Meggie lol - I’ve been writing in a notebook - the paper isn’t there, only parchment. And I like reading more stuff. I always did, but more. And I should shut up now. Great book, loved it!

Oh, and I’m gonna force my mates to read it. I can’t believe the ending!!!!!!!! Arrrrrrrrrrrrgh!

I just finished reading Inkspell a few hours ago. It was soooo amazing! Inkheart wasn’t as good but it was still a fantastic book. Inkspell held so much more….feeling: fear, love, joy, sorrow…
and it was all in between the pages of a book. It was quite captivating. This book was sooo amazing that I just couldn’t put it down. I was so distraught to discover Dustfinger’s death. I didn’t particulary like him in the first book because he was really mean to Farid eventhough Farid was only there to protect him. But I did grow to like him more in Inkspell. He seems to be one of those poeple who you’re suspicious about when you first meet them… you know, a closed book… hard to read…
but then he showed more love for Farid and really changed the mixed thougts I had about him. He wondered where Farid was when he didn’t enter the Inkworld with him… and the exchange that happened when Farid died… that was soo sad, i coulda cried ( but i didn’t…lol :D). I really thought it cute that Meggie and Farid were hitting it off. But the fact that they kept getting separated… sad.
You see there was so much hatred and yet so much love in this book… it even caused death. Dustfinger really grew attached to Farid. It was quite touching when they were in that cave thing near the Adderhead’s Castle because while Roxane lay asleep with her head on his lap, someone said to Dustfinger as he watched Roxane sleep: “You would die for her wouldn’t you?” and Dustfinger replied: “Perhaps. Or Perhaps not.” and it all became clear when he did “the exchange” (as the so chapter is called). What bugged me alot was the way Roxane treated Farid: with such hostility! icy glnces and in the end there were extremely harsh words ( it would bring tears to one’s eyes)…
This book really got to me emotionally… it was a truly a moving story full of deep emotions… and the characters? They are almost so real… you make think that sounds weird, but you know it’s the truth. And anyone who says otherwise, well, you obviously haven’t read a book (or a good one anyways).
And that’s all I am WILLING to say on the topic (there’s so much to say, but i might as well re-write the book)
Cornelia Funke?… keep writing, you know what your doing…
*Rowena*

I have read both inkheart and inkspell. I love Dustinger to bits and I was bawling my eyes out with the ending of inkspell. I hate meggie though. I also reckon shes stupid. meggie always does things to put her friends in danger and also doesn’t trust those who r innocent. I reckon she was stupid for loving farid. I personally would’ve been for dustfinger. I really hope ********** comes back in inkdeath.
great books mrs funke, but make sure to bring back ********** in the next book

I just can’t wait until the third book comes out.when does it come out anyway.I think Meggie and Farid are adorible together and that one scene just before the chapter ELINOR( LOOK IT UP IF YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT)IS SOOOOOOOOOO CUTE AND ROMANTIC.i DON’T THINK DUSTFINGER REALLY LOVES ROXANNE ANYMORE.NOW THAT HE HAS BEEN AWAY FROM HER FOR SO LONG HE SHOULD DEVORCE HER.ROXANNE SHOULD BE OUT OF THE STORY AT THE BEGINING OF THE NEXT BOOK.HAVE YOU NOTICED THAT MO (MORTIMER) IS ALWAYS THE HERO?????

I’m thinking in the third book Ms. Funke pretty much HAS to bring Dustfinger back.. I mean it is her book and she makes the final decision but she would lose many fans if he remained dead. Pretty much everyone loves Dustfinger even though (and mostly because) he is such a sketchy character just learning how to love someone so much that he would die for them.
I’ve heard about the change from the title Inkdeath to Inkdawn and currently back to Inkdeath again and I find this depressing. Doesn’t anyone else think Inkdeath is a depressing title? I personally think she should go with Inkdawn because even if some characters die a new day will always dawn for those who are left.
Also, as to the fact that she left off in the middle of things in the second book to lead up to the third, I don’t think the third book was the only reason she left off how she did. I’m guessing she will leave off at the end of the third book as well even though there won’t be a fourth just because of her quote “Perhaps there’s another, much larger story behind the printed one, a story that changes just as our own world does. And the letters on the page tell us only as much as we’d see peering through a keyhole. Perhaps the story in the book is just the lid on a pan: it always stays the same, but underneath there’s a whole world that goes on- developing and changing like our own world” (Inkheart, Funke 147). When she said this I took it to mean that the story doesn’t end with the end of the book, there will always be something new happening, a new adventure, even if it is not written about. So therefore I think that those of us who are expecting her to save Dustfinger and the Inkworld and wrap it up all nicely at the end will be surprised. After all, the story does not end when she quits writing it.
Overall I though both Inkheart and Inkspell were wonderful books and had a lot of meaningful quotes that related to real life as well as things in the books. Ms. Funke is a gifted writer and should be very proud of her characters who are definitely realistic and cause some readers to cry when bad things happen to them because of the emotions she so carefully portrays from each character.
Can’t wait for the movie, though I hope it turns out better than the movie of The Thief Lord, another of her books which was a really good book, but I found the movie a great letdown. Hopefully the same mistakes will not be made in the making of Inkheart the movie. (and no offense to those who did like the Thief Lord movie, its just my personal opinion that it was bad in comparison to the book, which unfortuneatly is usually the case..)
sorry for my massively long comment

I think this book was sooooo good! I can’t wait for the next book to come out!!! I think Meggie and Farid are definatly meant to be together, and I really hope that Dustfinger comes back to life somehow in the next book, because he is way to good of a character to die. I was kinda mad at him though, when he betrayed Meggie and Mo, and when he was in love with Resa, because my god person, she’s a married woman!
Also, I was really mad at Roxanne, because Farid is one of my favorite characters, and she was just being plain MEAN to him! I was about to start yelling my head off at her!
Well, I have to go, bye!
