Snow/Ice on the roads melt into cracks in the pavement then freeze again, expanding and breaking up the roads. Especially along the northern edge. That's why the state tree is the post with the flashing "caution construction" light on it. Don't listen to those people who say it's the Buckeye tree. Aren't you glad you asked? God's country, eh?
