Oy!

I don’t have much to say about the recent wacky Gorman statements. I did think it was really weird that someone representing a professional organization which has real issues with diversity would equate hip hop with dumbing down anything. So I don’t know if he’s racist or willfully clueless about technology, popular culture, and what it means to represent a professional organization with a modicum of tact. I’m not going to quit ALA, they already have my dues, and I’m going to the conference. I doubt they give refunds. Members of ALA elected Gorman in the first place, so there is something to be said for remaining a member and trying to vote for someone better the next time. I don’t know how I’ll feel in the fall when I have to write a check again. I might just decide that my money is better spent somewhere else, for any number of reasons. It does get a bit harder for me every year to talk myself into paying my dues, but I’m glad there are people like Rochelle who are trying to make things better.

I’m in the same boat: dues paid, conference plans made already, waiting until fall to make the decision to renew or not. I’m still in “wait and see” mode.

That “hip-hop” comment was so bizarre that I wonder if Gorman even knew what he was talking about — but I’d be a lot more inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt if he’d bother to explain himself. Something tells me that if he does, it’ll be another round of defensive blustering like his “blog people” piece.

If you think ALA is clueless, I could name any number of other professional, civic, and religious organizations that are at least as tone-deaf to their constituents. Tangognat may think I’m thick-skulled and clueless, but there are plenty of people who make me seem open-minded and tuned in. Be afraid …
