I miss the old security guard. I only saw him occasionally, as he made rounds through the library moving from place to place like a camoflaged shark. He’d nod as he passed the reference desk and then went on his way, I assume to patrol the more obscure parts of the building where you’d expect to find a security guard being secure. The new security guard wears WAY too much cologne and seems to enjoy lurking near the reference desk. I’m not too crazy about this because I’m highly allergic to perfume, don’t think looming security guards near the desk really project the welcoming image one would want to have at a public service desk, and after seeing Ong Bak for the second time (Tony Jaa’s elbows are a wonderful thing), I am convinced I have attained knowledge of muay thai through osmosis and would be able to defend myself by doing spinning kicks to an unruly patron’s head should the occasion arise. And we don’t really have unruly patrons anyway. We’ll see if he continues to lurk near the desk, I didn’t say anything this time because I hate being confrontational and was mystified by the lurking, but maybe next time I will point out the necessity of patrolling near the compact shelving….

Compact shelving with a non-functional switch has always inspired me to think Hitchcock would have used that instead of a shower if he’d made Psycho 40 years later. (I’ve never seen Psycho, but Everyone Knows The Scene, even me!)

Your library doesn’t have a policy in place mandating that no staff member in a public area (and by preference no one at all!) is to wear perfume? (Or any perfumed substance — the guard’s aftershave, e.g.) I thought that was fairly standard. You are far from the only person who is allergic, and libraries really don’t need patrons suing them for causing asthma attacks. Or having their own workers down all the time with asthma attacks, for that matter … Been there, done that, durn near coughed my lungs out.

I don’t know if my library has a policy about this or not. Also, the guard is employeed by the University, not by my library directly…I’m hoping that the wackyness was just due to it being his first week on the job.
