I agree with your comments. I'm just a new grad but in school I took one course on instructional strategies (and i was a TA for the Info Lit class). In one class we had a guest speaker who talked to us about MOOs and MUDs. Of course, she situated it within a course, and not an info lit course. I remember the students had to go through the MOO to get to e-reserves and related websites and that it was basically a spot for the students to access course-related material instead of a plain website. I think MOOs and MUDs might be a bit more useful than a MMOG. I agree that the game just wouldn't be practical. But I also think that course-integrated information literacy is more beneficial than a single IL course (whenever that's an option) so I'm not all for an IL specific MMOG.

Preach it, Sister :)

I play an MMPORG, and I agree with what you said about community building and game design. An info lit based MMOG... I shudder at the thought. If people are so into the online and e aspects of libraries, develop better P2P conferencing, virtual reference, online tutorials, etc. Not a learning game.

Whoever developed Quicken did it by having A Great Idea and then hiring A Great Programmer to make it happen. So you don't need to be A Great Programmer yourself -- you just have to recognize one when you see her/him. And then convince him/her to spend a year on starvation wages before you become the next Intuit and become so filthy rich that you can retire to read all the Manga ever drawn.
