W Juliet is a manga centered around acting, androgeny, crossdressing, and teen romance. You’ve got boyish girls and girlish boys! And Drama, My Dear!
Ito Miura is a tall, rangy girl who is the president of her high school drama club. She sees the other girls in the club swarming over a new member, Makoto Amano and quickly steps in to introduce herself and calm down the situation. Ito is cast as Romeo to Makoto’s Juliet in the school play and they quickly become friends. Ito is annoyed that she’s always cast as a guy in plays because of her looks — “Your handsome face, your slender body, your husky voice, your wide shoulders…you’re a classic leading man!” — as opposed to being cast in a role due to her talent.
Ito discovers that Makoto is really a boy, and wacky hijinks and complications ensue. The stories in the first volume are for the most part standalone episodes, and there isn’t as much focus on character development as I would have liked. Most of the stories center around preventing someone from finding out Makoto’s secret. The relationship between Ito and Makoto begins to deepen, and it’ll be interesting to see if the second volume has more character development. Ito is an entertaining heroine, as for the most part she is very comfortable in her own skin and very confident about taking action when someone annoys her.
So, overall this was a nice read, but not overwhelmingly wonderful. I’m going to be taking advantage of interlibrary loan if I decide I want to keep reading this series.
