I’ve put up a BIG list attempting to compile the comic books recommended for libraries from the “Lieber’s Eleven” meme. I think I might have missed a few lists that were posted on message boards or in blog comments, but I’ll be trying to improve the formatting of the list and adding in what I’ve missed in the next couple days. I noted when people were voting for the same book (Maus and Understanding comics were very popular) and I added some arbitrary categories because the list was getting pretty long. When I put the list together I was surprised at how few traditional superhero titles were recommended as well as how many non-fiction comics were recomended. If I missed including your list, please let me know!

Very nicely done! At first I was surprised at how few super-hero comics were listed–but then again, considering the readers that posted I suppose it isn’t all that surprising. I can’t believe I completely forgot to include McCloud’s “Understanding Comics”, and probably should have included it rather than the “non-existant trade” of the Shikwekwes by Litu. But I had for some reason been struck by Litu’s work since I cam across it a few weeks ago while looking around for some comics from Africa.
I’m also almost a little embarrassed that all but one of the “comcis of the world” selections are…urm…mine. I guess I wonder how appropriate it would be for a US library to really hold so many foreign works. Not that I think it’s a bad thing per se–I would rather be able to check out non-english material from the local public library. I suppose the Masereel is a fine exception as it is “textless”, but other than the Astérix Legionnaire and the Blood Sword Dynasty none of those works have been translated into English. And to tell the truth, I’m not even sure if this particular Astérix work has been translated (some other have)–and if I’m not mistaken, most if not all of the Hong Kong Jademan comics are in English. Or at least were publiched initially in both English and Cantonese–though you might have to ask James Hudnall about that.
Ok, I’m done now, and thanks again for compiling the list!

Lieber’s Eleven compiled
Tangognat has compiled a significant proportion of the Lieber’s Eleven: Compiled lists of eleven titles that libraries should shelve http://www.tangognat.com/eleven.htm Here’s my list, and some comments about why I included some of the works I did….

Well, reading comics in a foreign language is a great way to practice your skills if you are taking language classes at school. Putting this list together made me realize how ignorant I am of comics that aren’t either published in the US and/or manga.

True, and boy do I need the practice! There really are so many interesting works out there just waiting to be read. And there’s always that saying “too many books, too little time”. Sometimes I’m afraid I’ll just spend the rest of my life locked away in some room reading, reading and reading…

Great work on the list. I have one suggestion if I may. I understand separating manga out from the other works, but the books under that heading also range from “mature” to “all ages.” Obviously this isn’t going to be a definitive directory, but I think it’s useful to at least be aware of the crossover/confusion potential there.

I think you’re right about adding a sub category of mature for manga — I want to fix up the categories and create some navigation for the page eventually, but right now I’m just trying to keep up with all the lists! If you have any more suggestions let me know.
