you know you are dating a librarian when…

in: Library

You call up your boyfriend to whine about your illness, speculating that you may be dying of diphtheria or consumption, and he proceeds to take a medical dictionary off the shelf and starts reading the symptoms of diphtheria to you.

Librarians have a reference book for any occasion.

For reals? *I* can’t even rattle off LCC from memory…

It’s nice that your librarian boyfriend will attempt to diagnose you. The guys I date merely resort to prescribing more alcohol for any ailment.. :P

I couldn’t rattle off LCC from memory, but I know where to look it up :)
Maybe I should try the alcohol cure after my reference shift tonight…

Librarians aren’t the only people to suffer from the “let me read you the medical book” syndrome. Chemistry professors are also inclined to think they’re smarter than physicians (after all, they find it harder to get through our classes than medical school). So at the least symptom, they grab the Merck Manual or “Surgery for Dummies” and act as if they’ve been curing people for 30 years. But then, some chemists I know are librarians in disguise.

I helped convince my husband that his stomachache may have been appendicitis (it was, he had an appendectomy 12 hours later) … I couldn’t remember any of the reputable health websites we talked about in online searching class, but I figured that the Medical Libraries Association would have good links. And they did. And off we went to the emergency room.
