So I’ve been a little obsessed with the Hellboy movie recently. But that is a fangirl’s prerogative. I really wonder how someone who hasn’t read the comics would react to this film. I thought it was a great adaptation of the comics, and I didn’t mind the aspects of the story that had been rewritten to give it more of a hollywood-movie plot, because everything seemed to stay true to the spirit of the characters.
Ron Perlman is great as Hellboy, and he fights evil nazis! How much fun is that?! I thought that the set and lighting design did a good job transferring the mood of the comics to the screen. As a comic book movie, I thought it was better than Spiderman, although partly that might be due to the way the Spiderman’s origin has been told over and over again. Also, a cigar chomping demon is just cooler than whiny Peter Parker.

You were wondering about the reactions of people who hadn’t read the comics. One of my friends, at least, who had only paged through “Seed of Destruction” in a bookstore, utterly adored it, and only complained that the plot was a little scattered. He even liked Selma Blair.

Selma Blair was great!
I went with three people who hadn’t read the comics, and I get the sense that they enjoyed it just as much as people who have read the comics. They didn’t get the pancakes reference though.
