All about Alan Moore at Ninth Art.
I saw Master and Commander over the weekend, the battle scenes were very detailed and made me glad I decided to become a librarian instead of joining the British Navy during the 1800s.
I haven’t read any of the Patrick O’Brian books. During my short time working at a bookstore, I remember having a couple conversations with people looking for O’Brian books and thinking that they were really intense. Some of the O’brian fansites maintain dictionaries and glossaries, so if you were curious as to what a mizzen is or what it means to splice the mainbrace, there are ample web resources available to you.
One thing about the movie that bugged me though, is why anyone would lean a cello on a chair on a ship. Were the ships back then so stable that the cello would not be in danger of tipping over? Shouldn’t the cello be lashed down or in a case or something? Someone think of the cellos!!!!
If it weren’t enough already to be the king of anime, Hayao Miyazaki is contributing to the design of a man-made island, Teriha
I am thinking of the cellos. Poor, poor cellos.
Is Sally Struthers available? (Stupid question, I know.) She could bring the plight of the cellos to light. I’ll give her a call.
My collection development professor, a former map librarian, is completely ga-ga over him. O’Brian’s stuff is like crack to this guy–I bet he’s wigging over the movie too, right about now!
Oh, I can’t wait to see it. I love seafaring stories, whether it’s books or movies. O’Brian…they really broke the mold there.
And weren’t there drippy candles hanging near the ‘cello leaning on the chair, as well?
I think it was the brain surgery bit that made me most glad that I’m sitting in a cube copyediting rather than being a 19th-century sailor.
The kid actor was great. And the movie was entertaining enough that I waited till after it was over to create “Pippin grows another foot in height and joins the Navy because he’s jealous of Legolas getting to be a pirate” scenarios.
I know! The cello abuse gave me the creeps, and the friend I went to see the movie with had her face covered for all the creepy surgery bits.
The kid actor was really good!
saw it tonight. completely blown out of the water, as it were. oh, that was a terrible pun…
the kids, the good doctor, mr. crowe, the naturalism, the everything…let alone the look of it and the sounds, just, wow. i wanna go again!
